Maori in the Mainstream - Marian Pearce

Room 1 & 9 were scheduled to have a session with Marian Pearce modelling instructional teaching around the theme of Growing and Matariki. Unfortunately the timetable was tight and as she was running over time the half hour session was cut to 15mins. She shared a power point story of Rata and the waka and talked about the traditions around saying a Karakia before taking cuttings. she then talked briefly about the benefits of Kawakawa leaves and how they have been used traditionally. There was not a lot of time for student participation. at the end of the session I felt that it didn't help extend our knowledge because it was difficult to cover all that was intended in such a short time.
Next week we are extending on the traditional use of Kawakawa by making some Kawakawa Balm with the children where each child will have the opportunity to take away their own sample. I am really looking forward to sharing this hands on experience with the students.
